Acupuncture

At Stillpoint, our Acupuncture sessions are 45 minutes in duration performed by our registered Acupuncturist, Slava Finkelshteyn, graduate of Grant McEwan College. Acupuncture is a technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM, comprises the oldest, continually practiced, and literate medicine in the world. Its texts extend back approximately 2500 years. TCM views a person as an energy system in which body and mind are unified, each influencing and balancing each other.

TCM emphasizes a holistic approach that treats the entire person. Many people have found traditional Chinese methods of healing to be excellent tools for maintaining optimum health and preventing illness. It is effective for physical, psychological and emotional problems.

The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy called Qi (pronounced "Chee") present in every living creature. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways that are called meridians. As long as this energy flows freely along the meridians, health is maintained, but once the flow of energy is blocked, the system is disrupted and pain and illness occur. Oriental medicine aims to remove the blockages and restore the normal flow of Qi, thus promoting the body's ability to heal itself.

Oriental Medicine is holistic. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, the practitioner looks for the underlying pattern of energetic disharmony unique to each individual case and determines the causes of it. After that a specific treatment plan is designed.

TCM does not simply "block" the pain. Once the patient has been diagnosed, the aim is to re-establish the flow of Qi with the use of acupuncture, Chinese herbal remedies. Dietary and lifestyle recommendations may also be suggested.

Acupuncture is performed by inserting very thin metal needles into the skin at specific points on the body. The needles are 8-10 times thinner than hypodermic needles used for injections, and are barely felt when inserted. In our facility, only disposable needles are used, therefore eliminating any possibility of contamination and disease transmission.
